Where will we let new technologies take us? Working with the Future of Life Institute, we set out to help AI investors, journalists, policymakers, and the public imagine a wider range of possible futures. The AI industry's own "official future" tends to assume that more general AI brings more benefits, that powerful systems will stay safely under human control, and that we will be able to figure out the guardrails as we go.

We built a scenario framework distilled from dozens of existing depictions of AI's future including books, films, and FLI's own positive-futures worldbuilding competition. We then used this framework to write 13 original stories ranging from civilization-ending runaway scenarios to positive-yet-challenging visions of AI-enabled peace and prosperity.

These scenarios were pressure-tested with policymakers and technologists in a scenario-building workshop at the Dubai Future Forum, where small groups used a card-based version of our framework to construct and critique their own runaway and hopeful futures. The scenarios were then translated into Tomorrow's AI, an interactive scrollytelling website featuring original illustrated artwork alongside a free downloadable card deck and worksheet system.
